Ariel Winter, who stars in the immensely popular Modern Family as the character Alex Dumphy, has some extremely bright goals for the future. As Jamie Primeau wrote yesterday in an article for the online publication, Bustle, Winter plans to attend law school in the hopes of becoming a social justice lawyer.
Here is an excerpt from Primeau’s article:
Just like Alex Dunphy, the character she plays on Modern Family, Ariel Winter is brilliant, too. The recently turned 18-year-old is such an inspiration when it comes to promoting body positivity and standing up to slut-shaming. Her career goals are no joke either. While she plans to continue acting, Winter also wants to attend law school and become a social justice lawyer. She revealed these plans to People at Saturday night’s SAG Awards when they asked what she’d be doing if not on the red carpet that night. Winter said,
I would be doing exactly what I’m doing, which is going to school, applying to college and wanting to be a social justice lawyer. With my personal experience, I would have something good to give.
This is great news to hear, especially at a time like now when Hollywood actors and personalities are under fire for being too entitled and losing sight of the world outside the film studio. Here comes Ariel Winter, who just turned 18 years old a few days ago, with her eyes set on law school and a career outside of acting.
Ask yourself this: Did you have any clue what you wanted to do with your life at the age of 18? Very few young adults have even the slightest idea what they want to do with their lives at that age. Personally, I was as lost as a jock at Comic Con when I was 18. I had absolutely no idea what to do with my life, and something as daunting as law school would have been the furthest thing from my mind. Heck, the only reason I went to college is because I was told that it was the logical next step after high school.
(Thank the heavens I listened!)
This is not the first time that the young Modern Family star has proven to be more mature than her age suggests. Back in May of 2015, Winter fought, and eventually won, a lengthy court battle in order to become emancipated from her estranged mother. Winter was only 17 at the time, which meant she was fighting for the right to be responsible for herself and, more specifically, to take that responsibility away from her mother. That was an incredibly brave thing to do, especially for an under-aged woman working in an industry that causes so much public exposure. Winter’s busy 2015 continued in August when she decided to have breast reduction surgery. When she was asked about the reason for having the surgery, her answer was quite simple:
“I got it for myself. I can’t even really put it into words about how amazing it feels to really feel right.”
I tip my cap to Ariel Winter for continuing to fearlessly follow her passions and forge her own path. The most astounding thing about all of this is that she is just 18 years old. To already have such a high level of maturity, ambition, and self-respect is incredibly admirable and deserves to be applauded.
